Where to Find EPUBs

For free classics:

Standard Ebooks — the best-formatted free ebooks on the internet. Every book is carefully edited and designed. Start here.

Project Gutenberg — 60,000+ free books. Less polished than Standard Ebooks but vastly larger catalogue.

For books you want to buy:

Kobo — sells EPUBs you can download directly to your device. Same titles as Kindle, same prices, no lock-in. After purchase, download the EPUB from your Kobo account and upload it here.

Smashwords — large catalogue of independent authors. Many books sold DRM-free as EPUBs.

O’Reilly — if you read technical or business books, O’Reilly sells DRM-free EPUBs directly. Best source for professional nonfiction.

Why Not Kindle Books?

Kindle uses a proprietary format that cannot be exported as EPUB. Books purchased on Kindle cannot be uploaded to Focus Reader or any other reading app.

If you buy books going forward, Kobo gives you the same titles with files you actually own and can use anywhere.

Having trouble?

If your EPUB isn’t loading, the file may be DRM-protected. DRM-protected files are locked to specific apps and cannot be opened elsewhere. The books listed above are all DRM-free and will work without issue.
